Happy New Year and welcome back!

Here is a look at what is going on this week in Kindergarten…

Morning Meeting:

  • Sharing topic: What special activity/event did you do over the break? 
  • Winter poem


We will be working in a whole group this week reviewing rules/expectations, practicing independent and buddy reading for our centers.  I will be introducing a couple of new centers and the kids will be practicing how to use them correctly.  We will return to our readers workshop centers next week.

  • Identifying capital letters, punctuation, blends and sight words in our daily morning message.
  • Letter of the week: Y
  • Letter Y handwriting
  • Haggerty phonics
  • Sight word songs for: one, two, three
  • Creating and tracking the predictable sentence: Three, two, one, Happy New Year _____!  Filling in the blank with their name.
  • Class predictable book using our predictable sentence
  • Writing about our New Year’s resolution for school
  • Creating our ABC books: focusing on the letters, A-N and Y
    • Students will draw something that begins with each letter and write the word
    • I am hoping to complete the ABC books by the end of January


Theme (social studies/science): Feelings and being a good friend

  • Character Education

  • Counting to 80 by 1’s

  • Daily January math journal problem
  • Creating different shapes on geoboards
  • Identifying “sides and corners”
  • model and solve subtraction number stories using manipulatives with a friend
  • identify and solve different sorting rules
  • Number writing using different story scenarios/ Example) the total number of legs on 2 cats


Writing prompts

  • “I can share _______at school”.
  • “If a bully is mean to me I will_____”.
  • “I use the wheel of apology when_____”.
  • “I can be a peacemaker by_____”.

A few tidbits to remember…

  • It is that time of the year where students start bringing lots of articles of clothing with them to recess. It is very important that students can independently put their outside gear on.  Please practice if they are unable to.  J
  • Remind your little one to stuff their hat, scarf and gloves in the sleeve of their coat.  This is the time of year where lots of items are missing.
