The gingerbread man

Dear Parents,

Welcome Back!!!  Here is a look at what is going on this week in Kindergarten.

Morning Meeting:

  • Sharing topic: “What did you eat for thanksgiving dinner?  What was your favorite food?  Help prepare your child for what they will present to the class.
  • 4 gingerbread men song and poem



Word Wall: (choice of) wiki stix, jewels, rainbow writing, magnetic letters/cookie sheets

ABC candy: reading, stamping, writing and rainbow writing sight words

Library: Quiet read/self-selected books

Independent Reading: book box books, choosing a favorite character from a story and drawing a picture of him/her

Teacher table: guided reading groups, phonics/beginning, middle and ending sounds/ (gingerbread man CVC words)  We are really jumping into stretching out CVC words at teacher table.  The CVC words can be real or nonsense words.  Examples: (man, hug, tag, top, wug, zat)

Computer center: Starfall: ABC’s free choice on letters/higher: I’m reading

Parent Games: Roll and Record sight words

  • Identifying capital letters, punctuation,  and sight words in our daily morning message.
  • Letter of the week: G, creating a book of things that begin with the letter G.  Remember to bring pictures of things that begin with G, not words. J
  • Letter G handwriting
  • Haggerty phonics
  • Sight word songs for: come, at, go  (We will begin learning 3 sight words each week instead of 2)
  • Creating and tracking the predictable sentence: Come, look at the gingerbread_____!  Filling in the blank with a character that we have read about. (boy, girl, baby, pirate, man, etc.)
  • Class predictable book using our predictable sentence
  • Writing prompt: Sequencing 3 steps on how to eat a gingerbread man cookie.

Theme (social studies/science): The gingerbread man week 1

  • Identifying the characters, setting and ending to the following stories…
    • The gingerbread man
    • The gingerbread girl
    • The gingerbread boy
    • The gingerbread cowboy
    • The gingerbread baby
    • Comparing and contrasting the stories

  • Counting to 65 by 1’s
  • Counting by 5’s to 100
  • Counting to 100 by 10’s
  • Number of the day, counting and adding a new tally mark daily
  • Creating a cookie jar math journal to use over the next few weeks
  • Creating an addition number sentence about gingerbread men and tell the story that corresponds with it.
  • Exploring shape templates and adding shapes together to create a number sentence
  • Creating a gingerbread family and adding the total number of given objects
  • ST math on laptops
  • Gingerbread man symmetry
  • Creating gingerbread men from tallest to shortest
  • Create a subtraction number sentence about gingerbread men and tell the story that corresponds


  • New December Journals
  • Focus: Writing 2-4 sentences to describe our picture.
  • Areas we need to strengthen: capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, using periods and exclamation marks at the end of our sentences.
  • Writing prompt:  My favorite gingerbread story and character

A few tidbits to remember…

  • Room 101 needs old magazines/catalogs.  Please donate child friendly magazines to our class.  We will be using them to look for sight words.  Please send in at any time.
  • We will be having a sight word quiz next week.  Please continue to practice ALL the sight words daily with your child.
  • This week we are learning all about the letter “G”!  Please, have your child find things that begin with the letter “G” in a magazine or newspaper and have them cut it out and bring it to class.  Please do not bring concrete objects.
